We also offer dive packages for the more serious divers who wish to experience the best of the dive sites on offer.
Vanua Fire, a local performing group, stage a spectacular fire show every Friday evening at the Mele Beach Bar. Great music, lighting, and choreography make this a must-see while in Vanuatu. The troupe learnt their skills from a non-profit local Youth Centre that was started by a group of volunteers to give local youths skills and raise awareness about issues facing the Ni-Vanuatu today, including health, lifestyle, environment and governance. This troupe has embraced everything they have learnt and taken their skills to a whole new level. You will be amazed! This is a very popular event, so we recommend you get there early to get a good seat and order a pizza before they run out. Please note, this show is performed on a donation basis. Your contribution at the end of the show will be appreciated.
At the southern entrance to Havannah Harbour lies Eretoka Island, also known as Hat Island, due to its distinctive silhouette.
Eretoka is one of the most remarkable sites in Vanuatu and has been added to the World Heritage list by UNESCO due to its cultural significance. The island was the burial place for the legendary paramount chief in Vanuatu, Chief Roi Mata, and is known as Chief Roi Mata’s Domain. The staff at the Havannah can arrange tours to Chief Roi Mata’s Domain which is a must for those interested in learning more about the history of Vanuatu. Chief Roi Mata is credited with bringing an end to the bloody inter-tribal conflict that beset the tribes of Efate during the 14th and 15th centuries. Legend has it that he prepared a great feast to which he invited all of the tribes. In what might be seen as the earliest manifestations of BYO catering, Roi Mata asked each tribe to bring along a particular item for the feast, including crabs, fish, meat, mats and kava. When the tribes arrived bearing their produce, Roi Mata declared that any two or more tribes that brought the same item were henceforth to regard each other as family. It is unknown exactly when Chief Roi Mata died. According to Vanuatu custom, his 20 wives and closest aides insisted on being buried with him. Everything that was known about the life and death of Chief Roi Mata existed only in the oral histories of Vanuatu custom that were passed down via word of mouth. After 400 years, the story of Roi Mata had never lost its cultural significance but to outsiders it was difficult to separate historical fact from exaggerated cultural legend. Verifying the story was difficult because the site was considered off limits according to local custom law. In 1967, French archaeologist, Jose Garanger found the burial site. This finding was significant for Vanuatu culture as the work confirmed the oral history. The detailed accounts were so accurate that Garanger was able to pinpoint the location of the burial site and other features solely on the strength of these oral histories.

The Tranquillity Turtle Sanctuary is a haven for the hawkesbill turtle, which is highly endangered and hunted for its prized shell which is used to make jewellery and decorative ornaments. We will take you over to the Sanctuary in our boat, and can either combine this with your picnic drop off, or make it just a short outing. The visiting fee goes back to looking after the turtles, and you also have the option of sponsoring a turtle – which means you get to name it and release it. If your turtle is caught by friendly fishermen or scientists in the future, you will be notified by email where your turtle was found.

During World War Two, Havannah Harbour played a significant role in the Allied Pacific campaign. Efate was a major base for the U.S Military who built a significant amount of infrastructure including Bauerfield Airfield- now the International Airport. Havannah Harbour was utilised by Allied warships on their way to the battle fields in the Coral Sea, Solomon Islands and beyond and was home to a squadron of Catalina flying boats. Havannah Harbour was part of a long supply chain that extended from Australia and New Zealand to New Caledonia and north to the major US base on Espiritu Santo.
Jump into our courtesy bus at 10:00am and ask to be dropped off at the Mele Casades, situated at the foot of the ridge. The walk to the top of the Cascades is a beautiful hike through forest and you can follow the river and numerous swimming holes until you reach the top. Once you have your fill of the Cascades, negotiate a local bus or a taxi to the Beach Bar (or if you are feeling more active after your hike – you can walk the 20 minutes through Mele Village to the Beach Bar) where you can have a pizza and a cold beer for lunch. Our courtesy bus can pick you up around 4:20pm from the Beach Bar if you have advised us, or you can continue your adventure to town and meet our bus at 4:00pm at the Post Office.

This is a fantastic adventure to give you an adrenaline rush. The Vanuatu Jungle Zipline has six ziplines and two suspension bridges over deep canyons, a waterfall and amazing jungle. The tour lasts approximately one hour and can operate in all weather. Wear suitable clothing (for wearing a full torso harness- no skirts!) and preferably wear closed shoes. The zipline is located in the Summit Gardens, so think about combining this activity with the morning at the Gardens, lunch at the café and an afternoon zipline; or a morning zipline with an afternoon at the Cascades. The zipline team can also combine your zipline with a fifty metre abseil down a waterfall at the end – but you will get wet – so be sure to bring a towel and change of clothing! (2.00 pm tour only).
Best of Efate/ Havannah Canyon & Island Adventure
Daily at time of your choice. 25 minute flight

Tanna Volcano Day Trip (optional Twilight Tour Add On)
If you wish to get up close and personal with an active volcano, Tanna is one of the few places in the world where you can do this. After a flight to Tanna airport, you will be met and taken on a two-hour bush drive as far as vehicles can go to the summit of the volcano. You will walk up the last 10 minutes to the crater's edge, feeling the earth rumble beneath your feet. This is a breathtaking experience, as the volcano shoots lava and volcanic ash clouds into the sky over your head. Depending on which way the wind is blowing, be prepared to do the lava shuffle! For a small surcharge, the plane will wait at the airport until dusk and then fly over the volcano on your departure.
Ambrym and Lopevi Volcanoes - Volcano and Northern Island Explorer
Daily at time of your choice (morning recommended for best viewing)
The neighbouring active volcanoes of Lopevi and Ambrym are only a 35 minute flight from Port Vila, and are one of the most scenic and spectacular sights in Vanuatu. The black lava plains, emerald green forests and striking blue waters are an amazing sight and at times you can see the lava flowing right down into the ocean. These volcanoes have large lava pools that dwarf the crater of Tanna’s Mount Yasur, so they are more spectacular by air than their famous Tanna cousin. Ambrym is one of the world’s top ten most active volcanoes, having been in a regular state of eruption for over 200 years. You will fly over the lava vents, which is an absolutely amazing experience. On the way back, you will stop off at Epi Island for morning tea and a swim before returning to Efate with amazing photos and unforgettable memories.
Nagol Land Diving (April-June only)
Saturday only during the season Full day by plane. Departure at 8:30am
The origin of the modern day bungy jump, the traditional version from the island of Pentecost is not for the faint hearted. Young men tie vines around their ankles and jump from tall wooden towers as a test of their courage. The ceremony is not only a rite of manhood, but is to ensure a plentiful yam harvest for the coming year. You can see the land diving on Saturdays through various air charter companies. The scenic flight will also take you for a flyover of the volcanoes on Ambrym and some companies include a lunch stop on Epi Island. This trip is a must if you are here during the Nagol ceremony months, and we promise that it will be an unforgettable, once in a lifetime experience.

Ask for Ernest who will show you his World War II museum for a small fee. Go late afternoon and try kava at the local ‘Nakamal’. If you wish to do a full exploratory guided tour of the village with a local, please ask at reception and we can arrange this for you.
